Collecting and Hoarding

There is a difference in collecting as opposed to hoarding. One depicts looking for something that adds to a current pattern. Like watches of inherent value or more popular, stamps. It has a certain meaning and value.

Hoarding on the other hand is something entirely different. When you are merely just hanging onto everything without regard to its value or purpose then you are simply hoarding.

The first category could be obsessive but for the most part it is a hobby and interest that keeps you engaged with society and others. The second doesn’t. It would isolate you and potentially become unhealthy.

Just the other day I was talking to my friend who owns a roofing company called ConstrucToMax.com. He had this house that needed a repair. Apparently there was water getting in and wrecking her stuff inside. When he got there he saw the “stuff” that was getting wet. It was in his opinion “garbage”.

This person was a hoarder. Kept buying things they thought was interesting but overall was worthless to the rest of the world. He was struck at the person attitude about it. Apologizing for the mess when it was put there by no one else but them.

I say all this because I want to differentiate between collecting, which is what this site is about, and the mere adding things that have no value.

In life in general you want to add things that are valuable to you and get rid of things that in the grand scheme of things won’t add one iota to your happiness. Actually happiness is a great subject to consider when collecting.

Collecting should be something that brings about a certain happiness. The world is full of crap and dog doo. Why wallow in it when you can find something useful to look forward too?

Plus the fact the very thing you are collecting can hold its value which is something to be happy about.

You sink $1000 into something that can sell for the in 10 years is good. Anything extra is a bonus but initially you are doing well with that kind of return.

Of course extinct collecting is a very different things altogether and we will look into that in the days ahead.

Have a happy time collecting!
